Before starting any painting project, one of the first steps to take is preparation. Painting a room takes a little more than just grabbing a can of paint and paintbrush. Taking the time to prep your space will lead to smoother application and a more professional-looking result.

1. Clear the room: Remove any furniture, décor, and small items from the room you will be painting in. This not only protects your belongings from paint splatters but also helps eliminate tripping hazards, giving you a clear and safe space to work. 
2. Clean, clean, clean: It’s important to make sure all surfaces are clear of any dust or dirt, as it will affect your final paint job. Use a duster or rag to remove any dust or dirt on the walls or baseboards. 
3. Tape off the room: Utilize a masking tape like Killer Bee® Premium Yellow Masking Tape or BT-190 Blue Painters Tape to mask off areas of the room you want to protect from being painted. In most rooms, these areas are usually the ceiling, baseboards, and the trim around windows and doors. For best results, apply the tape in foot-long strips to prevent stretching and make application easier.
4. Start painting! Once your room is cleared, cleaned, and taped, you're ready to paint. After the paint has dried, carefully remove the masking tape at a 45-degree angle to reveal crisp, clean paint lines.
