Tape seems like an item that will never go bad. You always have a roll sitting around in your garage or basement that you can use when the time comes…but does tape actually expire?

The shelf life of tape depends on many factors. Every adhesive material has a different lifespan, but the shelf life usually ranges from about 1-2 years based on the date on the manufacturing date, material type, storage conditions, and when you open the product.

Adhesives such as acrylics and silicones are designed to be more durable and are used for long term applications, so these adhesives last longer than a rubber-based adhesive would.

However, no matter what type of adhesive you have, it is very important to store tape correctly to fully prolong the shelf life. Exposing products to extreme temperatures, humidity, or sunlight will likely shorten the shelf life of an adhesive tape.

The best practice is to store your tape products in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Most tapes should be stored at room temperature of 77 F. Please refer to manufacturer guidance on how to properly store your material, as different tapes might require different storage conditions.

So, in short: yes, tape does expire. But how can you tell if a tape has reached its end? Here are some signs that your tape may have expired:

  • Loss of stickiness
  • Discoloration (turns yellow or brown)
  • Hardening
  • Brittleness

While tape might seem like it lasts forever, it does have a shelf life. By understanding the factors that affect its longevity and following proper storage practices, you can ensure your tape stays effective when you need it most.
